ABC Awards and emfec are supporting the Genesis Research Trust by aiming to raise £3,000 in a virtual cycle to Burma.

The bike ride is taking place on a static bike at the ABC Awards and emfec offices in Nottingham, with members of staff from across ABC Awards and partner organisation emfec taking it in turns to contribute a few miles each to the running total every day.

The team will have to cycle a total of 4,920 miles between now and October to reach Burma. They are currently on 550 miles, putting the team right in the heart of Poland. The rest of the journey will take the team “virtually” through Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China and Bhutan.

Team members are also recording mileage they do on their bikes outside of working hours in a full team effort to ensure the target mileage is reached in a few months’ time.

To keep the momentum going, the team at ABC Awards and emfec has split into three groups and are competing each week to take home a trophy for the most miles cycled.

The virtual bike ride is in support of ABC Awards’ Head of Qualifications Research and Development, Denise, who is taking on the personal challenge of cycling across Burma this November. Denise is aiming to raise more than £3000 for the Genesis Research Trust, a charity close to her heart.

Denise’s personal challenge is for Women for Women Cycle Burma, a 450 km challenge taking in the foothills of the Shan Plateau to the vast Central Plains over 11 days.

Over the past 15 years, women have cycled and trekked around Burma to raise more than £8 million for Genesis Research Trust. The charity raises money for world-class research into the causes and cures for conditions that affect the health of women and babies, to understand more about premature births, miscarriages and still births.

The charity is chaired by Professor Lord Robert Winston, renowned for his ground-breaking research in fertility treatments. The team at ABC Awards and emfec are delighted that Professor Winston will be delivering a talk at emfec on 1 July and are looking forward to sharing their fundraising targets with him then.
