A science student from Central College Nottingham (Central) has been honoured with a national award for excellence on her course. Twenty-year old Katie White completed her Access to Higher Education and Employment course at Central’s Maid Marian Way Centre earlier this year, and she was one of only four Access students nationwide to receive an award for excellence from CAVA, the Access to HE awarding body.
Katie was nominated for an award by her Access to Science tutor, Jackie Reffin, beating off stiff competition from across the UK.
Katie is now studying for a degree in biochemistry at the University of Leeds. Katie said:
“I’m touched to have been nominated for this award which has been a big boost to me. If the going ever gets tough with my studies all the nice things my tutor has said will remind me what I am capable of.”
“Katie set herself high standards from the day she returned to learning. She juggled her studies with a part-time job as a teaching assistant. She produced excellent work, but also took the time to help her fellow students. We’re so proud of her and wish her the very best in her continuing academic studies and future career.”
“After doing my A levels without really knowing what I wanted to do in the future, and then my results not being quite as good as I would have liked, I decided to study an Access to Science course to give me an alternative route to university.
“The Access course helped consolidate what I had learned at A level and also trained me in some of those additional study skills that would be useful in uni assignments.”
The Access to Science course at Central is designed to provide a bridge for adults who lack the necessary formal qualifications for university-level courses in science.
Jackie received the award on Katie’s behalf at the CAVA annual conference on 28 November in Cambridge as Katie was sitting an exam that day.
Central College Nottingham is the new name for South Nottingham College which merged with Castle College in July 2011, running full-time courses for school leavers 16+ and part-time courses for adults and local business.
