An award-winning Loughborough College hair stylist has joined the crew of a popular US TV series.

Emma Sessions has been on location filming throughout summer for The Spanish Princess, a follow-up to The White Queen and The White Princess – and has so impressed bosses she is also set to join the hair and make up team on a major British TV show.

The latest in the mini-series, based on Philippa Gregory’s best-selling books, stars Game of Thrones actress Charlotte Hope playing Henry VIII’s wife Catherine of Aragon, Downton Abbey’s Laura Carmichael, Chronicles of Narnia’s Georgie Henley and Dame Harriet Walter and Emma has been behind the scenes creating looks for some of the drama’s biggest names.

Emma, who earlier this year was awarded gold at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists 2018 national final in the Fantasy category, went straight from completing her Loughborough College course to the set.

“I got a call late one night from Linda Boije. She’s a leading hair and make up designer working on the series on location in the UK and had just finished a long day. I’d been recommended to her by two other leading names in the industry – Jennifer Lenard and Amanda Green – after being given the chance to work with them on the photo shoot and video for this year’s British Barbers Association Hall of Fame and I couldn’t believe it when she offered me an opportunity to join the team on set – but it was for the next day!

“I contacted the hair salon where I work part time and was due in and my boss was great. She said, Go for it. In fact, everyone has been so incredibly supportive so I could do this alongside my family and work and I can’t thank them enough.

“I’ve travelled all over the country over the past few weeks working in studios and on location, including at Gloucestershire Cathedral, Berkley Castle and a Tudor mansion in Wales. It’s been crazy, I wasn’t even getting a chance to unpack my case and the hours are long but I have loved every minute.

“It’s fantastic to be in that environment with a cast and crew who are at the top of their game working on a production with a multi million pound budget.

“I’ve been looking after several of the principals, preparing all the wigs, responsible for taking all the hair and make up continuity photos…

“The Spanish Princess is airing early next year and it looks like I may get the chance to work on the next in the series. I have also been asked to join the hair and make up team for Call The Midwife.”

Emma, who achieved Distinction Star in her Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing at Loughborough College, added: “I can’t believe that six months ago I was quietly doing my qualification at the College, I’d never entered a competition and suddenly I am winning a national gold and working on set for a US TV series. It has been a whirlwind.

“I’ve had so much encouragement and support from Loughborough College, the staff in hairdressing and Karen Dixon, who leads the course. She’s been a great mentor. I’ve gained more skills and confidence than I would ever have thought possible. It’s opened up a whole world of opportunities. I have to keep pinching myself and I feel very blessed. This really has been the most amazing year of my life.”
