Talented footballer Lewis ‘Gibbo’ Gibbens, 18, has recently embarked upon his professional career, signing with the Mansfield Town Football Club first team.

From 2016-18, Lewis excelled as a member of the MTFC Academy at Brooksby Melton College, quickly progressing from the Performance Squad to the Residential Squad within his first year.

MTFC decided to secure Lewis as a first-team player after a series of impressive performances for the MTFC Academy, the Football Conference Alliance and the EPPP EFL Under 18s side, including securing a league title with the latter.

So far, Lewis has represented the first team in Portugal on the pre-season tour, and impressed the first team staff during his league debut away at Macclesfield, where the team picked up a hard-fought point.

John Dempster, Mansfield Town Academy Manager, said ‘Within weeks of Lewis starting at BMC it was apparent that he was thriving in the environment and making use of the outstanding facilities, including the Strength and Conditioning Gym, to improve his physical attributes. Less than one year into the programme, the MTFC coaches decided that Lewis should progress onto the Residential squad. When he returned for pre-season before his second year of the programme, it was evident that he had put a lot of dedication into his conditioning and development over the summer.

One of the best performances by Lewis and the team came against Crystal Palace in the FA Youth Cup, where the team lost out narrowly on penalties after an impressive display against their Premier League rivals. We look forward to monitoring Gibbo’s progress going forward, and we are very proud of his journey so far, knowing that the partnership between MTFC and BMC has played a huge part in this young person’s development.’

The MTFC Academy at BMC gives talented players the opportunity to study a Level 3 Sport course whilst benefitting from ten hours of professional coaching each week. Students are able to hone their sporting skills in the state-of-the-art facilities offered at BMC, which include a strength and conditioning gym, multi-purpose sports hall and 3G all-weather pitch.
