Eight Brooksby Melton College students were a part of the Leicester Tigers U18 squad last month, when the team drew 22-22 in the Academy League final against London Irish.

Josh Lugsden, Jake Sterland, Sam Edwards, Archie Vanes, Callum Oakden and Jordan Tebbatt were all part of the starting 15, with Dan Clements and Noah Leo serving as substitutes.

Archie Vanes and Sam Edwards successfully co-captained the team, leading them to a respectable 22-22 draw with the London Irish side at Sixways Stadium, Worcester.

The team were chasing a third successive title, after previous wins over Gloucester in the last two seasons. Both Tigers and London Irish had made it to the final with five wins each under their belts.

Academy Coach Tom Harrison said: ‘The game was a tight affair that could have gone either way, it was a credit to both teams and clubs for the hard work they have put in over the last few years. For me, it was extra special to see so many players from the BMC Rugby programme represent the college on such an occasion. To have so many who are now involved in the squad is not only a credit to the hard work of the individual players, but to the environment that the students/players, coaching staff and lecturers have developed here on the programme. With ten players currently involved with the academy U17s group, and recruitment for September 2020 well under way, we are hoping that the success of the programme will continue to grow.’

The students are all part of the Leicester Tigers AASE programme at BMC, which provides a unique opportunity for talented, ambitious rugby players to gain an exceptional education alongside a rugby training programme.

Students benefit from professional rugby training at BMC’s 850 Brooksby Campus, which boasts a £4million sports complex; including a full-sized sports hall, sport science lab, a high performance weight lifting gym, grass rugby pitches and a full-sized 3G all-weather pitch.
