A Loughborough College student has been accepted by a world famous training and education institution which has supplied nannies to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Anne, the Duchess of York and Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall.
Sally Coward is set to join the prestigious Norland College, whose graduates include nanny to Prince George, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo.
The elite school in Bath was founded in 1892 and is known for its distinctive brown uniforms but alongside teaching traditional skills like sewing and cooking healthy meals for children on an Aga, the students’ rigorous training now also includes lessons in martial arts, self defence and evasive driving by a stunt driver – to prepare them for everything from icy roads to paparazzi or even potential kidnappers.
Sally, who is completing a two year diploma in Childcare and Education at Loughborough College, was thrilled to discover she had been offered a coveted place at Norland College.
“I felt sure I wanted a career in childcare but decided I needed to boost my childcare education so after I studied my A-levels I began my diploma at the College alongside working at a nursery.
“I loved working with children in my placement and that convinced me I had made the right choice – and I gained so much confidence and knowledge through my College course. Everything I learnt I was applying at the nursery and that just increased my passion and ambition.
“I knew how competitive it was to get a place at Norland but I had to try – the training it offers is unique and is so highly regarded.
“As it’s a three year degree course working towards a BA (Hons) in Early Years Development and Learning I applied through UCAS.
“I had to give a presentation, describing my experiences of working with children, take part in a group discussion and have a one on one interview.
“I was coming out of work a few days later and switched on my phone to see an email confirming my offer of a place.
“That was an incredible feeling. I was in tears, my mum was in tears when I told her, my dad opened a bottle to celebrate… My parents were overjoyed and they are so proud. Every time I call my dad he says, ‘Is that the Norland nanny…?
“I really am so excited that I am going to be part of that heritage. Soon I will be arranging my uniform and in September I’ll be there. I’m thrilled to bits.”
