This popular network is pleased to welcome participants from NCFE. Dean Blewitt (Curriculum Officer) will provide an overview of their Functional Skills qualifications offer, including their partner company Skills Forward. The presentation will include a discussion of the effective use of intervention and delivery resources to improve learner attainment on their chosen qualification. During the course of the overview you will have the opportunity to interact with NCFE’s Curriculum Team which is made up of former practitioners in maths and English.

The meeting is also pleased to welcome an input from Jo Loss(Curriculum Co-ordinator English, Adult and Community Learning, Essex), who will share her experience of the key technologies that have proved successful in developing their learners’ English skills.

Finally, Tania Lunney (Kent Community Learning and Skills) will speak about the progress they have made in the development of learners’ literacy skills. Tania utilised the opportunities afforded by an Education Training Foundation (ETF) Outstanding Teaching Learning and Assessment (OTLA) project to experiment with an innovative approach. A gardening club for low level learners to practise their literacy skills outside of the classroom has been created. Learners write to local retailers to request donations of gardening equipment and plants in order to start a garden. They will cook some of the produce and sell some to raise money for a local charity. The objectives are to encourage independent research and enquiry and facilitate success and subsequent growth of confidence.

Facilitated by Dianne Robinson (ETF East Midlands Regional Specialist Lead for English) this meeting will provide valuable networking opportunities as approaches to developing learners’ English ability, confidence and independence in community settings are shared.
