Learners taking part in pilots for the new Level 2 Awards in MOT Testing have become the first in the UK to pass the new qualifications, which have been developed with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
The new qualifications, available for vehicle Classes 1 and 2, and Classes 4 and 7, are now compulsory for new MOT Testers who wish to gain the DVSA Certificate of Competence for MOT Testers, which is needed in order to become an approved DVSA Tester.
The qualifications replace the previous nomination system for training new MOT Testers and provide an opportunity for colleges, training providers and MOT Test Centres to deliver the qualifications directly at their in-house facilities.
Pilots have taken place in various locations across the UK over the past few weeks in order to ensure the qualification meets the DVSA’s high standards.
Some of the first newly trained MOT Testers have recently completed their ABC Awards Level 2 Award in MOT Testing at Wakefield College, a further education college renowned for its wide delivery of motor vehicle qualifications from Entry Level to Level 2.
Andy Kitchen, Curriculum Development Manager for Motor Vehicle at Wakefield College, said:
“As a college we were approached by ABC Awards to pilot the new MOT scheme. With their support, this has allowed us to complete a successful pilot to people working in the automotive business and looking to gain the MOT qualification status.
“The delivery of the MOT qualifications gives Wakefield College an opportunity to engage with the industry to provide a high standard of quality training to meet the expectations of the DVSA.”
Wakefield College also offers a range of ABC Awards qualifications for the motor vehicle sector, supporting learners at Level 1 and Level 2 to embark on technical automotive careers. The college wanted to make sure that their curriculum did not solely require “car mechanics”, but also body paint repair and motorcycle maintenance, to give their learners a range of skills to progress to employment.
With the addition of the new MOT Tester qualifications, Wakefield College can now support learners of all ages to upskill for the motor industry and to ensure they have all of the qualifications required to forge successful careers.
ABC Awards has also supported the DVSA in developing a Level 3 qualification to support the career progression of Test Centre Managers. The Level 3 Award in MOT Test Centre Management focuses on legislative and compliance knowledge, with emphasis on improving customer service, supervising staff and understanding quality systems and audits.
The three qualifications are regulated by Ofqual, the body responsible for regulating qualifications, examinations and assessments in England. The new qualifications will mean that all newly trained MOT Testers and Centre Managers will work to the same high standards across the country.
