‘Never give up on your dream’ is the advice from former North Lindsey College student Reo-Danielle Roberts (23) who is now working at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital as a staff nurse.
Reo joined North Lindsey College after being home schooled. This was a huge step for her just being back in the education system, being around others and also not knowing anyone and making new friends. Reo always knew she wanted to do a practical course and this was the reason she chose North Lindsey College to study for a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health Studies.
Reo settled in to College life well and loved the three years she spent studying. As part of the course students complete a work placement as part of one of the modules. Reo had a great experience during her placements and believes these placements were the basis for start towards her career.
Reo spent time at Little Angels Nursery in Brigg and had a really positive experience working with the children. Reo’s next work placement was at Scunthorpe General Hospital and spending time there really sparked her enthusiasm to work in the NHS and also with children.
Reo believes that her time spent at North Lindsey College led her to her future profession, she stated:
“If I hadn’t had these placements at North Lindsey College and the opportunities presented to me I wouldn’t have been certain of my future. They let me take the lead and the course was really good with supportive tutors who helped me with my application to University.”
After leaving College Reo secured a place at Hull University to study for a BSc Honours Degree in Child Nursing. When she had graduated Reo started to apply for jobs in children’s hospitals and accepted a job in Manchester. She then saw an advertisement for an open event at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. Reo attended the event, went through the assessment process and was offered a post as a staff nurse on a 24-month rotation, which enabled Reo to have experience in three different departments. Reo started in theatres as a scrub nurse then went to Oncology dealing with children with blood conditions, cancer and tumours and this is where Reo feels this is where she wants to pursue her career.
The third part of the job role involves working with private patients from all over the world.
“Eventually I want to be able to go out in the community and help and support children with cancer. It is a difficult situation to be in for families, it’s hard and as staff we have difficult days. The world is cruel at times but it is a pleasure to look after these children and be a part of their journey.
“I am very proud to wear my blue uniform and I have worked so hard to do so. I’m hopefully starting my Master’s Degree next and I am constantly trying to improve, increase my learning and excel myself and feel there is an opportunity to learn more.”
Sharron Stillyards (Lecturer in Health and Social Care at North Lindsey College) commented:
“Reo was an outstanding student who excelled on the Health and Social Care course. Myself and Teresa Salmon are very proud to see her achieve her dreams.”
Reo now lives in London and stays in nursing accommodation, she says:
“It is amazing living here but also very busy. North Lindsey College was a huge part of my learner journey and I would say to anyone, never give up on your dreams.”
North Lindsey College is the largest provider of post-16 education and training in North Lincolnshire, offering a wide range of further education programmes, both vocational and academic, and apprenticeship courses at a range of levels.
