Ten plucky students from Gateway Sixth Form College, based in Hamilton, Leicester competed at the Association of Colleges (AoC) 40th annual Sport National Championships in Nottingham from 20th to 22nd April, coming home with silver medal position as they represented the East Midlands for the second year in a row.

The College football team travelled to the University of Nottingham where they battled against athletes from colleges across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, enduring a gruelling schedule of nine games over the three-day event. On their journey to silver the Gateway team beat Bridgwater College (South West), Accrington and Rossendale College (North West), Neath Port Talbot College (Wales) and Barton Peveril Sixth Form College (South East). They drew with the eventual winners Kingston College (London), Middlesbrough College (North East), Sheffield College (Yorkshire and Humber) and East Norfolk Sixth Form College (East). The team’s only defeat came against Belfast Metropolitan College (Northern Ireland).

AoC Sport Managing Director Marcus Kingwell said, “What a fantastic weekend we’ve had at this year’s National Championships”

Gateway College Football Coach and Teacher of Sports Rob Hawkins added, “The players were phenomenal; they were incredibly motivated and worked tirelessly over the three days to achieve this incredible result. This achievement is a recognition of their hard work and commitment over the year and we are very proud to have represented the East Midlands for a second year at this level. Since bringing home their silver medals the players have not rested on their laurels and are now preparing for the Leicestershire Schools Football Association (LSFA) County Cup Final which takes place on Thursday 10th May. Congratulations and keep up the good work!”

The Gateway College football team are Arjuna Govia, Naeem Adam, Mohammed Mulla, Ayuub Moallim, Bhagyesh Patel, Cosmas Matwasa, Mamadu Djalo, Dylan Kanhukamwe, Karol Pinczynski, Adam Wood. All students are part of the Colleges Football Development Centre which identifies and nurtures leadership, coaching and sporting talent.
