The triumphant 12 Gateway students nimbly saw off competition from 16 other College football teams from across the East Midlands in the Association of Colleges (AOC) 7-a-side Football Tournament at the end of 2016, landing Gateway with the coveted place of representing the East Midlands in the National Finals in April.

In the regional heats, the Gateway College team came top of their grouping above Tresham College, Bilborough College and Grantham College to take the shield.

They had beaten Burton and South Derbyshire College in the quarter-final and, Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College (WQEI) and Loughborough College in the semi-final to finally come head to head with Tresham College in the final.

Rob Hawkins, Teacher of Sport at Gateway and Coach for the team said:

“The players performed fantastically well. Winning the tournament was an outstanding achievement and to do so without conceding a single goal was extraordinary! We are honoured to be representing the East Midlands in the national tournament and looking forward to bringing the trophy back with us!”

The Gateway College squad are Karol Pinczynski, Dujana Nasir, Sharmarke Jama, Jamie Black, Arjuna Govia, Jahdahn Fridye, Korey Thompson, Ayuub Moallim, Cosmos Mathwasa, Gio Sanchez, Reece Green, Devan Limbachiya.

The AOC National Football Finals will take place at Nottingham University in April 2017.
