North Lindsey College welcomed McDonald Waterfall to the College to deliver a cutting, conditioning and colouring masterclass with hairdressing apprentices.
The workshop took place in the College’s very own hair and beauty salon, ORA Hair and Beauty, on the 13 February 2017.
McDonald and Waterfall were joined by international hair colour, care and styling company, Schwarzkopf UK. Both McDonald Waterfall and Schwarzkopf UK wowed apprentices with their expertise and practical knowledge.
McDonald Waterfall have over 35 years’ experience in the industry and work within the education industry to raise the standards of hairdressing. Both their creative directors, Stuart McDonald and Darren Waterfall, started their careers at Vidal Sassoon London before progressing on to set up their own company. They are passionate about hairdressing and aim to support the industry by addressing a skills gap which has been created over the past 10 years.
Creative Director, Darren Waterfall said:
“We have worked with larger companies in the industry who invest a lot of money in new skills. We wanted to share that knowledge and grow the apprentices’ techniques to make them more employable in the future.”
The event started with an introduction to cutting before progressing on to developing the apprentices colouring techniques.
Hannah Wilson, Apprentice at Austin Hair Design said:
“I work in a salon but it’s good to learn new skills from other people in industry. I have learnt about how to cut longer layers and do a complete restyle. The session run by the College really has helped me to grow my skills in the salon.”
Specialist workshops are run regularly by the College to add another dimension to students learning from an employer’s perspective.
The College works in partnership with a large number of local employers, providing students with the gateway to go on to employment, an apprenticeship or higher education.
Karon Smith, Curriculum Leader of Hair and Beauty commented:
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase our students’ abilities and develop their employability skills. Hairdressing is not just about working in a salon and these events help to stretch students ambition.”
North Lindsey College is the largest provider of post-16 education and training in North Lincolnshire, offering a wide range of further education programmes, both vocational and academic, and apprenticeship courses at a range of levels.
