North Lindsey College students have been celebrating their academic achievements with their family, friends, College staff and employer sponsors of awards at this year’s annual Student Awards Ceremony.

Over 180 people attended the Olympic themed ceremony on Monday 12th September, linking in to the Paralympics 2016 in Rio. Audience members were also treated to a number of short performances by music students.

Keynote speaker of the evening was world champion swimmer and six-time Paralympic medallist, Fran Williamson. Guests heard about Fran’s experiences at Paralympic games such as Athens and Beijing, as well as her build up to London 2012.

Fran commented:

“I was told so many times that I wouldn’t be able to do things, I’ve been told ‘no’ countless times, I have been doubted, I have been overlooked, I have been bullied but I have worked and I have won! I would tell students that if you really want to do something; you will find a way!”

During the event students from the across the college were celebrated for their achievements in the arts, engineering, humanities and construction. There were also learners who were awarded for their support, engagement and progression during their year at North Lindsey College.

Parent Desanka Dimitrije was supporting her son at the event who received an Outstanding Achievement award. Desanka was proud to attend the event and see her son awarded for his achievement.

Desanka stated:

“Everyone at the College are so lovely, the staff go above and beyond. The event was so well organised and planned brilliantly. The College has been brilliant, my son matters to them, he isn’t just a number and his qualities are recognised.”

Jug Johal (Director of Estates and Facilities at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust) was delighted to win the Lifetime achievement award.

He commented:

“I am absolutely delighted to win this prestigious award. I knuckled down here whilst doing my degree, it wasn’t easy but I carried on. I have been with the NHS now for ten years and it is absolutely the best system in the world and we need to do everything we can to keep hold of it. Being heavily involved in sport myself; Fran has shown the power of sport and proved you can achieve so much despite your background.”

Mick Lochran, Deputy Principal at North Lindsey College said that the event was a fantastic opportunity to appreciate students’ talents.

Lochran said:

“North Lindsey College’s annual Awards Ceremony aims to acknowledge the achievements of students that have excelled throughout the past academic year,”

“I am always proud of the wealth of talent, commitment and courage among our student body that we recognise at the Student Awards and I would like to wish them and all our students the best of luck for their respective futures.”
