The teams at ABC Awards and emfec have completed a 4920 mile “virtual” bike ride to Burma to support colleague Denise in raising money for Genesis Research Trust.

Denise will be taking part in the Women for Women Cycle Burma, an initiative organised by the Genesis Research Trust, which involves cycling 450km across Burma to raise money for the charity.

Colleagues from across ABC Awards and emfec have collectively tallied up miles cycled over the last six months in a bid to travel the distance it would take to cycle from the UK to Burma. The idea was concocted by two of Denise’s colleagues in a bid to help her achieve her fundraising target of more than £3000.

The cycling has taken place out on the road, in the gym, and even in the office reception area, where colleagues have been gradually adding miles every day via a static bike, spurred on by donations from friends, colleagues and visitors.

The impressive feat has included 1277 miles from Denise herself, with two colleagues clocking up more than 500 miles each, and many more achieving more than 100 miles.

The virtual journey has taken in the sights of Eastern Europe and China and the team has been learning about each of the places passed along the way, including the Ugam-Chatkal National Park in Kyrgyzstan and the Russian centre of higher education and research, Saratov.

The final miles were completed by Denise and colleagues Jonathan and Dave who did a local cycle loop near the ABC Awards office and were welcomed back by their applauding colleagues.

Paul Eeles, Chief Executive of the Skills and Education Group, consisting of ABC Awards, ASDAN and emfec, said:

“Congratulations to Denise and all of the team at ABC Awards and emfec for completing this incredible challenge and for raising money for such a worthy cause.

“We all wish Denise the best of luck with her challenge next week which I’m sure is going to be very tough, and we can’t wait to see the photos of beautiful Burma when she returns.”

All of the money raised through the challenge will be donated to Genesis Research Trust, which raises money for world-class research into the causes and cures for conditions that affect the health of women and babies.

Denise was delighted to present a £750 cheque in July to Professor Robert Winston, the charity’s patron, who visited emfec to deliver a talk to education practitioners about how we learn.

Denise will now continue preparing for her Cycle Burma challenge which starts next week and will involve cycling 450km across Burma over six days in 25+ degree heat, starting in Bagan and finishing at Lake Inle.

At the last count, Denise is just £10 short of reaching her target of £3200 and there is still time to donate. If you would like to add a donation you can text DSCB53 followed by the amount to 70070 or donate via Just Giving here or on the Genesis Research Trust website.
