At ABC Awards, we have offered counselling qualifications for over 20 years and are well established within the sector.

Kirklees College, one of ABC Awards’ Centres, currently delivers three ABC Awards counselling qualifications. We spoke to Catherine Whittaker, one of their learners studying at their Dewsbury Centre. We asked Catherine about her journey to becoming a counsellor.

Catherine has previously completed an ABC Awards Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills and is now studying an ABC Awards Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, which will enable Catherine to become a recognised qualified counsellor.

We asked Catherine whether she has always been interested in counselling, and what made her choose this career path.

Catherine said:

“No, I was not always interested in counselling. I started work in a school for boys with severe behavioural, social and emotional difficulties. Working there made me want to help and support others through difficult times in their lives.”

When asked whether Catherine thought the qualifications had enabled her to develop her skills, Catherine stated:

“The qualifications have provided me and others with the opportunity and freedom to learn through group work, which allowed us to explore different counselling methods and practices, which could be applied in different circumstances.

“This flexibility and way of learning, has given me the confidence and self-awareness of the many different elements of counselling.”

Completing the ABC Awards Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling enables learners to progress onto a Postgraduate or Post Qualifying qualification. Learners often progress towards national accreditation status with professional lead bodies upon completion.

Catherine told us she plans to further study counselling, specifically aimed at children and adolescents. Catherine’s ambition is to become a counsellor and a foster carer, and she believes the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling will support her on the path to employment in the counselling sector.

We wish Catherine the very best of luck for her future as she continues to progress with her Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.
