The 3 March was a truly inspiring day at One Great George Street in Westminster. We had the privilege of attending the WorldSkills UK Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Heroes Awards. The atmosphere was charged with positivity, filled with the energy and passion of individuals and organisations dedicated to creating a more inclusive and equitable education. The awards celebrated innovation, dedication, and the transformative power of diversity.

 

The Importance of EDI in Education

Recognising the Heroes:

The awards, sponsored by the Skills and Education Group, and the University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC) recognised outstanding contributions across various categories. It was an honour to witness the recognition of these exceptional individuals and organisations:

 

  • Apprentice of the Year, sponsored by Gateway Qualifications: Andrew, United Colleges Group – Andrew’s dedication and commitment serve as a shining example for apprentices everywhere.

  • Inclusive Employer of the Year, sponsored by AIM Group: The Autism Wellbeing Project CIC – Their work in creating inclusive workplaces is truly commendable.

  • Training Provider of the Year, sponsored by Education and Training Foundation: Birmingham Metropolitan College – James Watt – Their innovative approach to training is making a significant impact.

  • Innovator of the Year, sponsored by Enginuity: Heathrow Inclusive Learning Partnership – Their groundbreaking initiatives are paving the way for more inclusive learning environments.

  • Educator of the Year, sponsored by FE Week: Wasim Collins, Coach Core Foundation – Wasim’s passion for education and his dedication to his students are truly inspiring.

  • Institution of the Year, sponsored by UVAC: Manchester Metropolitan University – Their commitment to fostering an inclusive campus community is exemplary.

  • Social Mobility Champion, sponsored by Skills and Education Group: The Landscaping and Eco Construction Team at Gower College Swansea – We were particularly proud to sponsor this award, celebrating their efforts in promoting social mobility.

  • Women in STEM, sponsored by The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry: Hannah Pearce, Gower College Swansea – Hannah’s achievements are breaking down gender barriers in STEM fields.

  • Outstanding Winner of the Year, sponsored by Into Film: Jagdeep Soor, Multicultural Apprenticeship Alliance – Jagdeep’s dedication to promoting multicultural apprenticeships is making a real difference.

A Celebration of Diversity and Inclusion:

The awards ceremony was more than just an event; it was a celebration of the power of diversity and inclusion. It was a reminder that when we embrace our differences, we unlock innovation and create a more equitable society.

 

A special highlight was the involvement of Kaye Jackson, Director of Business Growth and Engagement at Skills and Education Group. As well as being part of a judging panel, Kaye delivered an inspiring speech, highlighting the Group’s unwavering commitment to social mobility and inclusive education.

 

 

Kaye also had the privilege of presenting the Social Mobility Champion award to the well-deserving recipients, The Landscaping and Eco Construction Team at Gower College Swansea.

 

This award, proudly sponsored by Skills and Education Group, celebrates those who are actively breaking down barriers and creating pathways to opportunity for learners from all backgrounds. The team’s innovative approach and impactful work truly exemplify the spirit of social mobility.
