Following a highly successful launch of this new and exciting Network in the autumn term, we are pleased to facilitate a second meeting for those staff working at pastoral level. And, following consultation with those who attended the initial meeting, feedback has revealed that a beneficial topic for our next event would be mental health.
We know that the pandemic has widened the gap between socially and economically advantaged and disadvantaged learners and that levels of stress have increased in all student groups, particularly in those who have several disadvantages with which to contend. These stresses often manifest in students’ behaviours and attitudes, and we know that Ofsted has a particular interest in this area.
Nicola Martin (Deputy Principal, Gateway College) is passionate about the role of leaders in wellbeing initiatives and has agreed to share an approach to strategic planning and thinking around mental health. A few years ago, the college was delighted to receive a Carnegie Gold Award for their work in this field. In addition, Nicola is undertaking an Advanced Senior Mental Health Lead qualification (DfE funded) as part of the college’s ongoing holistic and community approach.
We know that networking works best face-to-face and this event will offer an opportunity for all those in a pastoral support role within their organisations, a chance to come along and discuss your organisational approaches to mental health. Facilitated by Dr Alison Scott (Lead Professional Development Lead, Skills and Education Group) and Will Sibley (Training and Development Manager, Skills and Education Group) we hope that you will be able to attend the meeting in person, current social distancing rules permitting. So, do come and join us prior to the event for a networking lunch from 12:15, with the official meeting starting from 13:00. An option to join the event remotely will also be available.
