Every June, company logos change to rainbow colours, social media feeds fill with Pride messages, and organisations publicly celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. While visibility is important, true inclusion is not something that should only be highlighted for one month of the year.
At Skills and Education Group, we believe that supporting LGBTQ+ individuals goes beyond Pride Month. Inclusion is not a marketing campaign or a seasonal initiative, it is a commitment that should be embedded into workplace culture every day of the year.
Our approach is built on meaningful action rather than temporary gestures. We have taken practical steps to ensure that all colleagues feel respected, valued and able to be themselves at work.
One of the ways we have demonstrated this commitment is by introducing pronouns into email signatures. This simple but effective change helps create a culture where gender identity is respected and assumptions are reduced.
We have also created pronoun badges, allowing colleagues to share their pronouns confidently and helping to foster a more inclusive environment for everyone.
Recognition for our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion came when we were honoured with the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Award at the Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards. This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of colleagues across the organisation who are passionate about creating an inclusive workplace.
Supporting transgender colleagues is another important aspect of our inclusion journey. We have ensured that transgender individuals have access to appropriate bathroom facilities that align with their gender identity, helping them feel safe, respected and comfortable in the workplace.
Respecting individuals also means using the correct names and pronouns. We understand how important this is to a person’s identity and we actively encourage colleagues to use the names and pronouns that individuals choose.
In addition, we have added processes to ensure that systems such as Sage HR and email accounts can be updated to reflect a person’s chosen name. This helps ensure that colleagues are recognised and addressed correctly across the organisation.
These actions may seem straightforward but together they create a workplace where people feel seen, respected, and supported. Inclusion is not achieved through a single initiative or a June campaign. It is built through consistent actions, policies and behaviours that demonstrate respect every day.
As Pride Month is celebrated around the world, we are proud to stand with the LGBTQ+ community. More importantly, we are proud that our support does not begin on 1 June and end on 30 June. At Skills and Education Group, inclusion is a year round commitment and we remain dedicated to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive as their authentic selves.
Because Pride is not just a month, it is about people, respect and belonging every day of the year.
